Skin Resistance Changes and Measurements of Pain Threshold.
نویسنده
چکیده
When the end-point is reached in the HardyWolff method of measuring pain threshold, there is a sharp change in the subjective experience resulting from the stimulus. When the radiation intensity is below the level of the pain threshold, the sensation is one of heat alone. If the pain threshold is exceeded, there is a sensation of heat with an added factor which has been variously described as "a tweak," "a stab of pain," "a pin prick," or "a threat of tissue damage." The usefulness of this technique lies in the fact that however this endpoint is described, it can be duplicated on subsequent trials and after the administration of drugs. The appreciation and description of this endpoint must involve a complex series of neural pathways, including the cerebral cortex. Skin resistance, on the other hand, is primarily under autonomic control, and is only secondarily affected by the cerebrum. Since the stimulus intensity can be adjusted to obtain equal subjective experiences, simultaneous measurements of pain threshold and skin resistance should furnish a means for differentiating between autonomic effects and those involving higher centers. These measurements might be expected to furnish an objective check on the accuracy of the subjective reports, for when the stimulus exceeds the pain threshold, there is a sharp increase in the emotional content of the stimulation and a sudden increase in the magnitude of the skin resistance change would be anticipated. The results obtained from such simultaneous measurements are described in the present report.

The effect of low power LASER acupuncture on experimental pain threshold in normal subjects
Background: Acupuncture is an indispensable part of traditional Chinese medicine for relief of pain. The purpose of this study was the immediate & latent of low power LASER Ga-Al-As irradiation applied to acupuncture points on experimental pain threshold. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on seventy adult women ranging from 20 to 40 years old assigned randomly into two groups...

Background & Aims: Many evidences show that regular resistance exercise training can increase activity and release of opioids in the CNS. Also it is known that as the body needs magnesium sulfate antagonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor as a pain reliever, it increases resistance exercise. In this research, the effect of resistance exercise and oral magnesium sulfate on pain threshold o...
متن کاملChemical ablation of the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus and its effect on electroencephalographic tracings and pain threshold in the tail flick test
The present study was carried out to explore the possible involvement of the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus in the inhibitory descending pain control system associated with the tail flick test and EEG recordings. Adult male (NMRI) albino rats weighing 200 ± 20 g were used. Rats were divided into three groups: experimental, sham and control. The arcuate nucleus was destroyed unilaterally ...
متن کاملWhat Color is My Arm? Changes in Skin Color of an Embodied Virtual Arm Modulates Pain Threshold
It has been demonstrated that visual inputs can modulate pain. However, the influence of skin color on pain perception is unknown. Red skin is associated to inflamed, hot and more sensitive skin, while blue is associated to cyanotic, cold skin. We aimed to test whether the color of the skin would alter the heat pain threshold. To this end, we used an immersive virtual environment where we induc...
متن کاملStudies on Pain. a New Method for Measuring Pain Threshold: Observations on Spatial Summation of Pain.
The purpose of these studies has been to present a new method for measuring pain thresholds, together with experimental observations on the physiology of pain and on the effect of various chemical agents upon pain thresholds. Methods for estimating the intensity of the stimulus required to evoke a painful sensation in the skin may be classified under the headings: mechanical, chemical, electric...
